Annual Charity Dragon Boat Challenge

Saturday 16 June 2007 at Pangbourne
Most Successful Dragon Boat Challenge Ever!

£15,000 raised for the Nominated Charities and Causes

The 2007 event was the most successful ever in that it raised some £15,000 passed over to the various nominated and supported causes.  You can see what these were by looking at the Money Raised page.

In total, since Pangbourne Rotary ran the first Charity Dragon Boat Challenge in 2001, the event has enabled about £46,500 to be raised.

Following the arrival of the Henley Dragons squad and launching the dragon boats, we started the day about 09.30.  All went well and the finals completed at the end of the afternoon (see Race Schedule).  Apart from a few quick showers, yet again the weather was kind to us.  As in earlier years, it was a really fun day for the crews, their supporters and the many visitors to the Fete who came to watch the races in between sampling the huge variety of stalls and fun events that characterise the Fete.  A few pictures of the racing, riverbank activity and spectators can be found in Riverbank Gallery.

Thirteen crews took part in the normal spirit of friendly but highly competitive rivalry and you can see who they were in Participating Teams.  Their pictures are in Crews Gallery.  Did I say that it was competitive?  Well, the three finalists were separated by only one and a quarter seconds!  In their race-off the next three crews, who had been edged out from the major final, were split by 0.08 seconds.  In fact only four seconds separated the top nine crews.  If that isn’t competition, then what is?  Maybe we shall need electronic timing in 2008!

The Winners were Kidde Graviner, followed by The Grosvenor and Foster Wheeler.  All three were proud to collect their Dragon Head prizes, see Winners Gallery. For overall results, timings etc see Results

Another ‘First’ this year was the capsizing of a boat.  This resulted from an exuberant crew getting decidedly overexcited and standing up when they heard that they had won their race in what had been a very close finish.  Fortunately there were no casualties.  Click here to see some pictures Capsize.

In particular this year we congratulate The Norton Practice (Nortons) who raised over £8,000 in sponsorship for their nominated cause.  Quite astonishing!
